Every year, thousands of agricultural producers, equipment engineers, and tradespeople converge on the Keystone Centre in Brandon, Manitoba for regional agricultural expos.

Earlier this month, our shop partnered with the local Westman Maker & Electronics Guild to deliver a live technical briefing on a rising threat across the prairie provinces: Targeted combine RTK GPS receiver theft and heavy machinery keyway vulnerabilities.

The Rising Threat: $15,000 Domes Stolen in 45 Seconds

Modern combines and high-clearance sprayers rely on precision GNSS/RTK receiver globes (StarFire, Trimble, Outback) mounted on the cab roof. A single receiver globe often costs between $8,000 and $18,000 CAD.

One of the greatest security challenges for agricultural producers in Western Manitoba is distance. A modern multi-generation grain or cattle operation easily spans three to eight square miles (thousands of acres). Gateways, seed treatment sheds, and auxiliary chemical storage compounds are often miles away from the main homestead.

Cellular trail cameras frequently fail because rural cell towers don’t penetrate the deep Assiniboine River valleycoulees, and monthly multi-SIM data fees for 15 remote gates get exorbitant quickly.
