One of the greatest security challenges for agricultural producers in Western Manitoba is distance. A modern multi-generation grain or cattle operation easily spans three to eight square miles (thousands of acres). Gateways, seed treatment sheds, and auxiliary chemical storage compounds are often miles away from the main homestead.
Cellular trail cameras frequently fail because rural cell towers don’t penetrate the deep Assiniboine River valleycoulees, and monthly multi-SIM data fees for 15 remote gates get exorbitant quickly.
Over the past four months, our shop designed, programmed, and field-tested a custom 915 MHz LoRaWAN telemetry network tailored for harsh prairie environments.
The Network Architecture
LoRa (Long Range) operates in North America on the license-free 902–928 MHz ISM band. Its chirped spread spectrum (CSS) modulation allows weak signals to be decoded even when buried below the RF noise floor—ideal for shooting over rolling prairie hills and shelterbelt tree rows.

Designing for -40°C Reliability
Any consumer IoT hardware will die within two weeks of a Manitoba January. Standard Lithium-ion (NMC) batteries cannot accept charge below 0°C without permanent lithium plating and fire hazards.
To make these nodes survive winter in the Assiniboine Valley:
- Battery Chemistry: We switched exclusively to Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) cells paired with a low-temperature charging cutoff circuit. If the internal thermistor reads below -5°C, solar charging is automatically disconnected while the node continues discharging down to -30°C.
- Deep Sleep Duty Cycle: The node sleeps drawing just 12 microamps. When a gate swings open, the magnetic reed switch triggers a hardware interrupt on the ESP32 GPIO pin. The node boots in 80 milliseconds, transmits an encrypted 24-byte packet containing the sensor UID, battery voltage, and tamper status, and goes right back to sleep.
- RF Antenna Selection: We mounted 5.8 dBi fiberglass omnidirectional antennas high on fence posts with silicone self-fusing tape wrapped over the N-type connectors to prevent moisture and frost intrusion.
Field Verification Test
Last week, we installed the central gateway atop a 60-foot decommissioned wooden grain leg elevator on a client’s main yard.

The furthest test node was deployed at a pasture gate 6.4 kilometers away, behind a ridge of bur oak and trembling aspen trees. The gateway successfully captured every single transmission with an SNR above +6 dB!
Integration with Lock Hardware
Physical security and digital telemetry should never be siloed. Each monitored gate also received an all-weather American Lock 700 series solid steel padlock keyed to the ranch’s grand master system. If a gate is opened without the padlock being unlocked (e.g. someone cutting fence wire or lifting the hinges), the LoRa node triggers an instant push alert and audio chime in the farm kitchen.
Technology doesn’t have to be complicated to be robust. By blending proven RF hardware with practical locksmithing, we are creating real, dependable security for rural Manitoba producers.
